How to Apply Scalp Serum the Right Way (Most People Waste It)

Three rules for getting serum onto your scalp instead of your hair, and how an applicator comb does all three for you.
You bought a scalp serum. You've been using it for a month. Nothing's changed. Before you blame the serum, check how you're applying it, because most people put it on their hair, not their scalp, and that's where the money goes to waste.
The problem with the dropper
Serum bottles come with a dropper. You squeeze a few drops, they land on top of your hair, you rub them in with your fingers, and most of the product ends up coating the strands. Scalp serums are formulated for skin, not hair. On strands they do nothing except make your roots look greasy by noon.
The three rules of scalp application
- Part, then apply. Make a part, apply along the exposed skin, make the next part an inch over, repeat. Six to eight parts covers the whole scalp.
- Less than you think. A full scalp needs about 1 ml. If your scalp feels wet, you've used too much.
- Massage for 60 seconds. Not to "activate" anything, but to spread the product evenly and to feel where you missed.
How an applicator comb changes this
A scalp applicator comb is a comb with a small refillable chamber and hollow teeth. You fill the chamber with your serum or oil, comb through, and each tooth releases a little product directly at the root while parting the hair for you. The three rules above happen automatically: it parts, it doses, and the teeth massage.
It's especially useful if you have thick or curly hair, where getting a dropper anywhere near the scalp is a fight.
What to put in it
- Any water-based or lightweight oil scalp serum.
- Rosemary oil diluted in a carrier oil (never neat).
- Your leave-in scalp treatment on wash day.
Skip anything thick or waxy. It won't flow through the teeth, and cleaning it out is annoying.
Cleaning
Rinse the chamber and teeth with warm water after each use, and once a week run a little dish soap through it. Let it air dry open.
