Heatless Curls Overnight: A Beginner's Guide

, by Mellina, 1 min reading time

Damp hair, one silk rod, eight hours of sleep. The step-by-step and the four mistakes that ruin it.

Heatless curls look complicated on TikTok. They're not. You wrap wet-ish hair around a soft rod, sleep, and unwrap. The result is soft waves with no heat damage, no outlet, and no skill. Here's how to get it right the first time.

What you need

  • A heatless curling rod (a silk or satin tube, usually with two scrunchies).
  • Damp hair. Not wet, not dry. About 70% dry is the sweet spot.
  • Optional: a light mousse or curl cream.

Step by step

  1. Prep. Wash, towel-dry with a microfiber towel, and let hair air dry until it's just damp. If your hair is fully dry, mist it lightly with water.
  2. Part. Make your usual part. Lay the rod on top of your head like a headband.
  3. Wrap. Take a section from the front, wrap it around the rod away from your face, and keep adding sections as you go down. Keep the tension even; loose wraps give loose waves, tight wraps give tight curls.
  4. Secure. Scrunchie at the end of each side.
  5. Sleep. 6 to 8 hours. A satin bonnet on top keeps the wrap in place.
  6. Unwrap. Slowly. Don't brush; separate the curls with your fingers. A drop of oil on the ends.

Common mistakes

  • Hair too wet. It won't dry overnight and you'll wake up with damp, flat hair.
  • Sections too big. Smaller sections, more defined waves.
  • Brushing it out. Brushing turns curls into frizz. Fingers only.
  • Wrapping toward your face. Away from the face opens up the style.

How long do they last?

One to two days for most hair types. Refresh day two with a satin bonnet at night and a little dry shampoo at the roots in the morning.

The Mellina Silk Waves set is the rod-plus-scrunchies version described here. If you're switching between heatless nights and quick heat touch-ups, it pairs with the cordless Sparkle for the days you're in a hurry.
