The rule
Cordless straighteners contain a lithium-ion battery. The FAA requires that devices with installed lithium batteries travel in the cabin, not in checked baggage, because a battery fire in the cabin can be handled and one in the cargo hold cannot. TSA follows the same rule. Most airlines also require the device to be protected from accidentally turning on.
Some older gas-powered cordless irons (butane cartridges) have stricter rules and may be prohibited entirely. Battery-powered USB tools are the ones that are allowed.
